Taking cognizance of the onset of the monsoon season, the Local Government Minister, Punjab, Mr. Navjot Singh Sidhu has got into action and directed all the Commissioners of the Municipal Corporations and the Regional Deputy Directors of the department to pull up their socks and appoint nodal officers apart from establishing flood control rooms at every Urban Local Body (ULB) which would be operational 24x7.Disclosing this in a press statement, the minister also emphasized that all the roads as well as the storm water drains must be thoroughly cleaned with requisite equipments at disposal. He also directed that the ULB staff must be kept fully prepared to meet any kind of contingency arising in view of the monsoon season.Warning against the lax approach with regard to this issue, Mr. Sidhu said that any negligence in handling the flood control measures would be severely dealt with.Further disclosing, the Director, Local Government Department Mr. Karnesh Sharma said that any complaint and information concerning flood situation can be given at toll free no. 1800-1800-0172 which is already in operation at Chandigarh. He also said that the standard operating procedures of the Union Ministry of Urban Affairs regarding urban floods have been communicated to the field offices. He also said that weekly report on the issue must be submitted to the headquarters by the field offices.
