Expressing serious concern over the problems related to basic amenities being faced by the people, CPI (M) State Secretary Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami and PDF chairman Hakim Mohammad Yasin have urged the Election Commission to clear the misconceptions within the administration with regard to the guidelines set-in Model Code of Conduct. In a joint statement issued while referring to the scarcity of essential commodities, frequent curtailment in electricity, damaged electricity transformers, dismal condition of roads and poor supplies of safe drinking water at various places in Kashmir, the two leaders have said that the Model Code of Conduct has provided an easy excuse to the otherwise sluggish administration in the state. One fails to understand that how come the Model Code of Conduct bars the administration to provide basic amenities to people,” they observed while, appealing the Election Commission to at least clear the misconceptions within the administrative set-up with regard to their duties during the election periods.
The two leaders remarked that the people have already suffered much due to an untimely heavy snowfall this year and the continuing incessant rains has created havoc in many parts of the valley adding to public woes. They observed that the administrative inertia has further coupled the problems being faced by the people.“Various delegations have complained to us about damaged transformers, no electricity, scarcity of ration and no drinking water. The height of official apathy is that at some places in North and South Kashmir, the affected families whose houses got severely damaged due to recent snowfall are yet to receive some relief as the administration takes refuge in model code of conduct,” the two leaders said, while stressing on Election Commission to issue guidelines to the administration to act in the interest of public.
