Implementing yet another of his government’s poll promises, Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Thursday approved extension of the facility of accidental insurance cover to nearly accredited 4200 media persons with yellow cards.Disclosing this here, a spokesperson of the Chief Minister’s Office said that every accredited and yellow card holder journalist in the state would be covered under accidental insurance to the tune of Rs. 5 lakh. The United India Insurance Company has been selected, through the tendering process, by the Department of Information and Public Relations, and an agreement is expected to be signed soon to this effect, said the spokesperson. Under the proposed agreement, the insurance cover would be provided to the nominee of the journalists in case of any accidental death claim as per the stipulated provisions. In accordance with the provisions of the scheme, the benefit of 100 percent of the sum insured i.e. Rs. 5 lakh would be paid in the case of accidental death, permanent total disability, loss of two limbs, or loss of one eye and one limb. Besides, additional benefits have been provisioned in terms of 100 percent sum insured amounting to Rs. 5 lakh in the case of loss of sight in both eyes and Rs. 2.50 lakh for the loss of one eye or one limb i.e. 50 percent of the sum insured. It may be recalled that the Chief Minister had earlier exempted media persons from payment of toll on state highways to fulfill another election promise to the media fraternity.
