The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) today asserted the Congress government had deliberately fielded a junior advocate to contest the State’s case against Local Bodies minister Navjot Sidhu to subvert the cause of justice and help Sidhu walk free in a homicide case.In a statement here, former minister Bikram Singh Majithia said the Congress government’s intentions on the issue of safeguarding the interests of the common man had become clear after the heirs of an old citizen who was killed by Navjot Sidhu were provided with a weak defence to subvert the cause of justice with the clear motive to win a reprieve for the Local Bodies minister.Mr Majithia said it was incumbent on the Congress government to explain why it had left the family of Gurnam Singh, who was the victim of Navjot Sidhu’s fist blows, in the lurch. “This family has already been saddled with the cost of litigation for decades. Now when it has come up with compelling proof in the form of a televised self confession by Sidhu that he was present at the scene of the crime, that he had entered into an altercation with Gurnam and even landed fist blows leading to the latter’s death, the Punjab government has started working overtime to get Sidhu off the hook”.Asking why the State was protecting a murderer in this fashion, Mr Majithia said the government should not indulge in double standards. “The case is before all of us. Sidhu has himself confessed to killing an innocent, unarmed old man who was not even allowed to escape because his car keys were wrenched away from him. Sidhu also made a mockery of the death in a widely televised show by stating that thousands of such incidents take place every day and that he is not Gautam Buddha that he would turn the other cheek when provoked. He has proved himself to be a heartless man by wreaking and destroying an innocent family and even boasted about it openly”. The Akali leader said just when the cricketer turned politician had done a hit wicket by making an extra judicial confession; the Congress government was trying to protect him by trying to give him a walk over by indulging into match fixing with a murderer. Such an anti-democratic attitude is indefensible”, he added.
