Police on Monday foiled the protest march of Anganwadi workers and detained scores of its members after they tried to march towards Clock Tower (Ganta Ghar) here to press the government over their demands. The Anganwadi workers earlier assembled at Srinagar’s Pratap Park and staged ‘Dharna’ there against the government for failing to fulfil their demands of increasing their monthly honorarium. The protesters are also hunger strike to protest the ‘failure of government over fulfilling their demands’.The protesters said that the government has miserably failed to look into the issues pertaining to the Anganwadi workers, who are working are serving the department on meagre amount. They according to KNS correspondent said that the government has ignored the Anganwadi workers at all fronts. “We are serving the department with dedication and honesty but the government is turning their eye blind towards our plights,” they said, adding that the government should have increased the monthly honorarium of the workers upto Rs 14000 per month.

“I am the sole bred earner of my family and the government is pushing my family towards starvation as the monthly honorarium being paid by the government is insufficient,” Fahmeeda Hameed, a protesting Anganwadi worker said. She urged the state government to look into the sufferings being faced by the hundreds of Anganwadi workers here. The protesting workers said that the government has assured them several times that their genuine demands will be fulfilled soon but unfortunately all the promises and assurances done with them proved hoax on the ground.“Every successive regime has failed to fulfil its promises done with the Anganwadi workers,” they said, adding that the government should take immediate steps in this regard to put an immediate end to the sufferings of people. The protesters later tried to march towards Clock Tower (Ganta Ghar) here to block the road to mark a protest against the failure of government. However, the women police swung into action and foiled their attempt and detained scores of its members.
