A student from South Kashmir has claimed that it has devised a method for calculating median without using median’s formula through mean by following certain rules.Meer Muzamil from Nai-Basti area of South Kashmir’s Anantnag district says that ‘Individual Series’ ‘Discrete Series’ and ‘Continuous Series are the three main things that are required to calculate the Median.“In both individual and discrete series the calculation of Mean and Median is too easy. And in some cases the Mean and Median of the data are same. The problem arises in continuous series where the Mean and Median of the data is calculated by using two different sorts of formulae. To remove this sort of problem of using two formulae, I have devised a method of calculating Median through Mean following certain easy rules. This method is also known as SMF’s Method. This method is very useful for the students as after remembering these rules once a student will be able to find out the Median of a particular data without doing any sort of calculation.”
“Before going to the rules, we have to calculate the Mean first and then we have to draw the cumulative frequency table to find N/2 and to check which Median class will be selected then the Median of a particular data will be equal to:
Rule no.1: If the frequency corresponding to the selected median class is either highest or lowest then the mean and median of the data are same
Rule no.2: If the mean is greater than the selected median class then the median of the data is approximately equal to mean minus S but if then also it is greater than the mean then the median of the data is approximately equal to L2 [upper limit] of the data. When it is lesser then Mean plus S but if then also it is lesser then it is approximately equal to L1 [lower limit] of the data [where S=4]
Rule no.3: If the mean of the data lies in between the selected Median class and also if the highest or lowest frequency doesn’t lie in that class interval then the Median of the data is approximately equal to mean minus S.
Rule no.4: If the Mean is equal to L1 of the selected Median class then the Median of the data is approximately equal to Mean plus F and when the Mean of the data is equal to L2 of the selected Median class then the Median of the data is approximately equal to Mean minus F. no matter if the highest or lowest frequency is corresponding to that median class. [Where F=3].
Moreover, “I think that Mean should be called as the father of all calculations in statistics. My dream is to devise that sort of method that will be very helpful and will give the approximate value of all calculations without using their formulae through mean. I will devise that sort of method if given a chance.”Meer Muzamil thinks that it is because of the encouragement he is getting from his mentor Mr Showkat Ahmed and Uncle Farooq Ahmed that he may be able to make a mark in the subjects of mathematics and Statistics. “I along with my friend Salman Younis have authored a book titled “S@My True Potential” that will soon hit the stands. There is one more book ‘The Real Guider’ that we are also going to publish in the near future,” said Muzamil. (CNS)
