Women’s Commission organizing seminars across JK on women's rights

'Education holds key to empowerment'

The Jammu and Kashmir State Commission for Women is conducting seminars at educational institutions across the State to spread awareness about the fundamental rights guaranteed to women under the Constitution.Chairperson, State Commission for Women (SWC), Ms. Nayeema Ahmad Mahjoor said the seminars are primarily aimed at making people aware about the rights guaranteed to females under the Constitution and other laws, as also about the role of the commission in safeguarding these rights.Ms Mehjoor has impressed upon the female students to commit themselves fully to their academic pursuits and focus exclusively on their education at this stage of life. She said education holds key for empowerment and emancipation of women.While highlighting the role of State Commission for Women in safeguarding the rights of the females in the state, the Chairperson has called upon the girls to come forward, assert their rights and help the commission in creating a society free of violence and discrimination against women.The first program in the series was held recently at Government College for Women, M. A. Road Srinagar on May 18 followed by Government Girls Higher Secondary School, Kothibagh, Srinagar on May 25. The SWC Chairperson said similar programs will be conducted at other institutions.As the end of these seminars, the students were encouraged to ask questions regarding the Commission and the issues faced by them. The girls evinced keen interest and actively participated in the deliberations. They asked many question and made various observations regarding their issues and expectations from the Commission. The Chairperson assured them that the feedback gathered from these sessions will be utilized in making the functioning of the commission more effective and meaningful.Ms Nayeema Mehjoor said the Commission shall continue to organize such programmes in the weeks and months to come.
