The Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare inaugurated the Residential Block at Lady Hardinge Medical College (LHMC), here today. The Foundation stone of the Residential Block was laid by the Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh on 3rd November, 2012. The Residential Block includes 30 Type-IV Qtrs, 30 Type-III Qtrs and 128 Rooms of Resident Doctors Hostel constructed with a cost of Rs 37 crores. 

Speaking at the occasion Shri Azad said 3,000 patients are treated daily in the OPD whereas 300 patients are admitted everyday to Smt. Sucheta Kriplani Hospital and Kalawati Saran Children’s Hospital. He said that the Government is keen to create human resource as well as infrastructure in the health sector in the country. The Health Minister stated that for Redevelopment Plan (1st Phase) Rs.586 crores (construction cost: 471 Crs.) have been allocated. It is planned to add 570 beds by end of November, 2014. During Phase-I, OPD block, accident and emergency block, IPD block, Radio Therapy block, Academic Block, Under Graduates’ Hostel will be constructed. Sixteen major OTs, 44 ICU Beds, 9 lecture theatres and 7 laboratories will be added to the infrastructure of LHMC by the Government. 

The Health Minister highlighted that huge infrastructure has been created in the country under NRHM. During the term of UPA-I and UPA-II 18,000 and 33,000 hospitals have been added respectively at the Sub Centre, Primary Health Centre, Community Health Centre and at district level hospitals in the country. Shri Lov Verma, Secretary, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said that LHMC is the oldest premiere Medical College in Delhi which was founded in March 1914. It started working in 1916 and just 16 students were enrolled for the 7 years course. Now 200 new students are enrolled every year to this institution. He stated that substantial infrastructure has been planned and under construction under phase I of Redevelopment Programme and new Super Specialty has been proposed in LHMC under Redevelopment programme Phase II. Present at the occasion were Dr. (Prof.) Jagdish Prasad, DGHS, Dr. Atul Murari, Director, LHMC, faculty members and students of Lady Hardinge Medical College.
