Zayed University observes Earth Hour

The one-hour event recorded impressive savings of around 2.98 ton of carbon dioxide emissions and about 1.288 Kwh

In efforts to combat climate change, save the planet for future generations, and improve on energy savings, Zayed University celebrated the Earth Hour by turning off the lights in both Abu Dhabi and Dubai campuses for one hour between 8:30 pm until 9:30 pm on Saturday evening.The one-hour event recorded impressive savings of around 2.98 ton of carbon dioxide emissions and about 1.288 Kwh.Earth Hour is the world’s largest grass roots environmental movement focusing on climate change. It is an opportunity for people around the world to show their gesture towards global warming and climate change that have started showing significant effects on environment.Zayed University participated in the one-hour event, which was organized by the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), in line with the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, and under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of Dubai Executive Council and in partnership with the Supreme Council of Energy, Emirates Wildlife Society (EWS), and in association with the World Wild Fund for Nature (WWF), to limit global temperature increases below 1.5 degree Celsius. 

Earth Hour is an annual, global movement that started in 2007 that called on cities and homes to switch off their lights for one hour to limit carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions that is the main cause of global warming and climate change. The event was first celebrated in Dubai in 2008.This year, Zayed University management participated in the event, with the support of Serco Estate MEP team toimprove on energy savings from 2016.Professor Reyadh AlMehaideb, Vice President of Zayed University, reaffirmed the University’s commitment to be part in the fight against climate change by using less energy and switching to low-emission renewable resources. Prof. AlMehaideb also pointed out that Zayed University played a great role in promoting awareness about environmental issues among its students through establishing workshops and participating in local, regional, and global conferences that address energy consumption, climate change, green economy, and global warming in order to raise environmental awareness and consciousness.
