Warning the people of the state against voting for communal and fascist forces like the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Punjab Congress president and chief ministerial candidate Captain Amarinder Singh on Monday lashed out at the two parties for promoting anti-nationalist agendas and promised to usher in a `naya savera’ by wiping the tears from the eyes of every section of the state’s populace, including the Dalits, farmers, businessmen, youth and women.Pointing out that the Badals had earlier sold off Punjab’s water rights to Haryana, the PPCC president warned that giving vote now to AAP would be akin to giving parched Punjab’s much-needed water to the neighbouring state since Kejriwal, being a Haryanvi, would never stand up for the people of Punjab. The PPCC leader recalled how he had camped in Kandukhera to push for a linguistic plebiscite to decide the village’s fate at the time of Punjab’s reorgnization, and vowed to continue to fight for the state’s interests on the SYL issue, asserting that he would defy the court orders and go to jail rather than allow a single drop of water to leave Punjab. He warned the people that Kejriwal, with his Haryanvi roots and Hitler-like mentality, could not protect Punjab’s waters.
Exuding confidence of a clean sweep in the assembly elections, Captain Amarinder urged the voters of Dirbha, Sangrur and Ahmedgarh (Amargarh), where he held a series of public rallies, to ensure that the Congress attains 2/3rd majority in the House to enable it to transform the face of Punjab. The Akalis and AAP were fighting between themselves for the second position in the election race, in which the Congress had already appeared the clear winner, he added.Pointing out that there was complete communal harmony in the state during his chief ministerial tenure, Captain Amarinder hit out at Badal over the spate of sacrilegious incidents, saying he would pay for his sins in trying to polarize Punjab on communal lines. “I will not spare anyone trying to spread communal strife in the state, which still has the wounds of its earlier communal unrest fresh in its mind,” vowed Captain Amarinder, adding that Parkash Singh Badal would have to pay for his sins in this world itself and could not go to the next world without being punished for the atrocities committed on the people of Punjab.
The Punjab Congress president reiterated his promises to waive off farmers’ loans and give one job per family, besides ensuring revival of the industry that had fled under the Badal regime.Announcing expansion of the atta-dal scheme to include sugar and tea leaves, and enhancement of the Shagun scheme to Rs. 51,000, Captain Amarinder said the Congress was committed to the holistic and inclusive development of the state. He also assured the people that their local problems would be addressed on priority by his government after the polls, promising to fulfill the demand for a college in Sangrur, as well as a school, a hospital, railway overbridge and bus service in Ahmadgarh. He also promised a thorough probe into the Pearl Group scam to ensure justice for the victims.Referring to the agri crisis in the state, he lamented that the Badal government had not only mortgaged vital properties to pay salaries but had even mortgaged the earnings of the Mandi Board for the next seven years. Besides loan waiver, which he was committed to, crop patterns would need to be changed to make farming profitable for small holdings once the Congress comes to power in Punjab, he added.
Captain Amarinder flayed Badal for the procurement mess faced by the farmers, saying the Akali government had failed to repay the money taken from the central government for procurement, as a result of which the Centre had refused to lend out any more money.
Captain Amarinder also lashed out at the Badals for the harassment and victimization of employees, including policemen, and promised to ensure their welfare, as per the manifesto of the party. In Sangrur, with party candidate Vijay Inder Singla by his side, Captain Amarinder stressed that this was the last chance for Punjab’s revival. The PPCC president called upon the people to support party nominee Ajaib Singh Ratual in Dirbha and Surjit Singh Dhiman in Amargarh to bring Punjab back on the path of progress and development.
