Punjab Congress president Captain Amarinder Singh has assured the state’s Anganwadi Workers and Helpers that his government would look into their long-pending demands on priority and take suitable measures to address their problems. In response to a memorandum, Captain Amarinder said the Congress would take up their issues soon after assuming power in the state after the assembly polls. In their memorandum, the Anganwadi Workers and Helpers highlighted the plight of workers and helpers employed under the ICDS scheme across the country, saying they had not been granted the status of labourers or employees despite providing important services. Noting that the workers and helpers, who were being paid a measly Rs. 5100 and Rs. 2550 a month, were victims of social exploitation, the memorandum urged the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) president to end the same. The memorandum demanded status of class III and IV respectively for the workers and helpers, and increase in their remuneration to Rs. 18000 per month, besides DA. It further said ICDS should not be privatized and all those working under it should be given pension of Rs. 3000 on retirement.Captain Amarinder assured that their demands would be looked into sympathetically and all possible steps taken to alleviate their sufferings under the next Congress government in the state.
