Enthused by the Congress agenda and fed up of the Badals’ dictatorial and anti-people policies, more than three dozen Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leaders and workers from Amritsar and Gurdaspur districts joined the Punjab Congress on Thursday, less than three weeks before the Assembly polls, scheduled for February 4.Around two dozen Akali leaders and workers from Majitha assembly segment in Amritsar district, along with a dozen from Sri Hargobindpur (Gurdaspur district) and one from Jandiala Guru (Amritsar district) were welcomed into the Congress fold by state party president Captain Amarinder Singh.
A large number of youth leaders and sarpanches/ex-sarpanches were among the joinees, who expressed their faith in the leadership of Captain Amarinder and said they found the Congress to be the only hope for the alleviation of the sufferings of the people of the state. From Majitha, among the prominent joinees were Tarsem Singh Sialka (President, SC Wing, District Amritsar Rural), Palwinder Singh Sialka (ex-Sarpanch), Youth Akali Dal (YAD) leaders Major Singh Sialka, Gurbir Singh and Tarsem Singh Gill. Several women Akali leaders also quit the party to become part of the Congress, along with Sardar Narendra Singh Ball (Sarpanch, Dhada). In Jandiala Guru, Youth Akali Dal general secretary and ticket aspirant Amrik Singh Bitta was among the joinees.Among the joinees from Sri Hargobindpur were SAD joint secretary Ranjit Singh Sangrama, YAD pradhan Karambir Singh Padda, Fateh Singh Kandila (member, District complaint redressal committee).Welcoming the new joinees, Captain Amarinder said the signs for SAD were ominous and the writing was clearly on the wall, with their own party men and women realizing the futility of staying with the Badals, who had left no stone unturned to destroy and devastate Punjab.
