Kavinder Gupta urges people not to dump solid waste in watercourses

Speaker reviews progress of strengthening of deep drainage system in Gandhi Nagar Constituency

The Speaker Legislative Assembly, Kavinder Gupta today urged the people to desist from dumping solid waste in storm-water drains and Nallahs to prevent inundation of residential areas during rains.The Speaker said this while interacting with the people during his visit to Digiana and Nai Basti areas of the Gandhi Nagar Constituency to personally take stock of the works being executed for strengthening and upgradation of deep drainage system and sewer network in the area.The Speaker was accompanied by the officers and officials from Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC), Public Works Department (PWD), Urban Environmental Engineering Department (UEED) and Power Development Department (PDD) besides local representatives from the concerned areas.Kavinder Gupta urged the people to make use of the dustbins and avoid dumping of waste in drains and Nallahs. “The people should develop the habit of dumping the waste in dustbins instead of throwing it in the drains and Nallahs resulting in choking of watercourses,” he said.

The Speaker directed JMC to expedite the pace of unclogging and cleaning of the drains so that the next phase of the project can be implemented.Kavinder Gupta said main objective of the project is to fulfill the sanitation requirement of general public and reinforce the existing sanitation infrastructure in the area.

The Speaker evaluated the works accomplished till date with regards to removal of encroachment near/over drainages, sewerage removal, unclogging of blockages etc. He directed the allied agencies including PWD, UEED, PDD to work in tandem with JMC to ensure a comprehensive and all encompassing output of the project. He also asked JMC to remove all encroachments leading to blockade, clogging of the drainage system.The Speaker directed the PDD authorities to shift the electric poles as their present placement may lead to traffic congestion, illegal parking besides becoming a cause for encroachment. Instructions were also passed to JMC to install dustbins along the road at both Digiana and Nai Basti area for the convenience of the people.Later, the Speaker visited Nanak Nagar and met the locals to address the persistent problem of seasonal water logging in the area.He directed JMC and other concerned agencies to prepare a detailed plan to link small flood drains with major flood drain network especially in the settled congested colonies to resolve the problems faced by these localities due to seasonal flooding.The Speaker was accompanied by Commissioner JMC Manmohan Singh, SDM South Sonu Pargal, XEN UEED Rajan Sharma, XEN JMC Joginder Kumar, XEN PDD Sudhir Gupta, XEN PWD (R&B) Rajan Mengi, XEN PHE V K Khajuria, CTO JMC Talat Mehmood, Health Officer JMC Dr Anita Salgotra, Chief Khilafwarzi Officer JMC Kamini Kesar besides other officials.
