The Punjab Congress continues to draw veteran politicians from across party lines, with former Akali Dal leader Kamaljit Singh Karwal, a close associate of the Bains brothers, meeting Captain Amarinder Singh here on Thursday and expressing his desire to join the party along with his supporters.Independent councillor from Ludhiana, Kamaljit Singh Karwal, who runs his own forging business, met the Punjab Congress president here to express his full allegiance with the party, which he said offered the only succour for Punjab’s aggrieved people. Associated with the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) since 2007, he had won the Municipal Corporation elections in 2012 on party ticket but had quit the party during the Lok Sabha elections in 2014 along with the Bains brothers. In January 2015, he rejoined the SAD, accusing the Bains brothers of being disloyal. However, he soon became disillusioned again with the SAD and decided to quit the party in favour of the Congress. At his meeting with Captain Amarinder, Karwal was accompanied by his supporters, Kulwinder Singh, Haramrit Singh, Rajan Saluja and Baljinder Singh (Jindu), all ex-Akalis.Extending his welcome to them, Captain Amarinder said they would be formally inducted into the Punjab Congress later in Chandigarh.
