Legislator from Sonawar Constituency Muhammad Ashraf Mir Saturday participated in the protest held by quarry holders at Panthachowk area of Srinagar city. The protest sit-in resulted in the massive traffic jam for hours as the protesters blocked the road.The protest sit-in was organized was United Quarry and Himalaya Qaurry Associations while a large number of people affiliated with the quarry work participated in the protest who expressed resentment over the government decision to stop the quarry holders from extracting stones from the quarries at Panthachowk and Athwajan.The legislator who supported the protest said that it was an unreasonable and illogical decision on part of the government top official and it ought to be revoked. Mir said that he will personally meet the Chief Minister and will request her to look into the matter.Mushtaq Ahmed, President United Quarry Association told CNS that the government decision has hit thousands of people associated with the quarry business badly. “There are workers who don’t’ have any other means to earn a living. We all have been suffering. The participation of the legislator in our protest encouraged us and we are hopeful government will reconsider their decision,” he said.The protest culminated peacefully.
