Minister for Animal, Sheep Husbandry and Fisheries, Abdul Gani Kohli, today directed the concerned to prepare action plan for upgradation and modernization of existing poultry hatcheries   for the benefits of the poultry rearers.The Minister was speaking at a meeting held here to review the status of poultry sector.He said the Government would also encourage poultry rearers to set up farms on modern lines and in this regard the Animal Husbandry Department would provide requisite technical support and financial assistance.He said that setting up of these farms will not only benefit the poultry rearers, but will also generate employment opportunities for the unemployed youth also.

Kohli said that main objective of the Government is to promote poultry rearing so as to cater to the local demand and thus reduce dependence on its import.He stressed on augmenting existing poultry industry so that landless and marginal farmers can make their living out of poultry rearing.On the occasion, the Minister was apprised that poultry rearers are importing 3.50 crore day-old chicks, besides one crore poultry birds from neighboring states yearly for consumption in the Valley alone.The Minister exhorted upon the officers to redouble their efforts for increasing poultry production in the State. He directed conducting awareness programmes so that more and more people are attracted towards poultry rearing for its increased production.Secretary Animal, Sheep Husbandry, Director Animal Husbandry and other senior officials of the Department attended the meeting.
