EC working towards larger participation of voters in elections: Shantmanu

Chief Electoral Officer, Mr Shantmanu today held an interactive session with students of IIMC, Jammu Centre .While speaking in the session, Chief Electoral Officer asked the budding journalists to approach right persons to get correct information for which knowing the government administrative hierarchy at each level by the journalists is of utmost importance.He further said that media / journalists are source of information to the society, as such, factual position needs to be disseminated among the public, which can be gathered from the appropriate authority at the source.Mr Shantmanu spoke at length about the role of Election Commission of India towards larger participation of eligible voters in the election besides ensuring strict adherence to the model code of conduct. While talking about challenges being faced during election, he emphasized the need to include about 40 percent of the voter population who are not casting their votes due to various reasons.  

While Election Commission is effortlessly educating the voters to exercise their voting rights, there is need for the society including NGOs beside Government machinery to sensitize / motivate the eligible voters for the purpose, he added. He stated that summary revision of the electoral roles is being conducted at the appropriate time and revision of said rolls is being done online as well. Replying to a query about bogus voting, he stated that use of EVMs has played a major role in restricting such evil.Special Officer, In- Charge of Jammu Centre, Manohar Khajuria  while  giving a brief resume of the course being undertaken in the railhead campus said that  the permanent campus would be set up at Keran (Ban Talab) Jammu for which land has been taken over by IIMC. He also informed that Students of Jammu Centre have secured first position during its first three batches at all India level, which was appreciated by the CEO.
