Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee president Capt Amarinder Singh today led the party’s dharna against the abduction of a teenage girl from her house on September 24. He was joined by the parents of the abducted girl and other party leaders including the Congress Legislative Party leader Sunil Jakhar and several other MLAs and ex-MLAs. Former Chief Minister and senior party leader Ms Rajinder Kaur Bhattal also joined the dharna. The Congress leaders sat at the dharna for about an hour in front of the Kotwali Police Station here. However, in a strange coincidence as Capt Amarinder was about to speak at the dharna, the news was flashed across that the abducted girl had been recovered and the main accused Nishan Singh arrested. Those who attended the dharna included the Punjab Congress general secretary and Dhuri MLA Arvind Khanna, Tripat Rajinder Singh Bajwa, Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, Ms Guriqbal Kaur, Ms Karan Kaur Brar, Raja Warring, Tarlochan Sund, Bharat Bushan Ashu, Joginder Singh Panjgraian, Gurpreet Kangar, Jagbir Brar, Makhan Singh, Kikki Dhillon and others.Lashing out at the criminal negligence and silence of the state government about the case, the PCC president asked the Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and the Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal, who is also heading the home portfolio as was this an example of the good governance that a helpless girl was abducted from her home while her parents were brutally manhandled. While expressing relief over the news of the recovery of the girl, he hoped that she joined their parents soon. “We can well imagine the anxiety and trauma the parents have undergone for almost about a month now when they did not have any news about their daughter”, he said, while wishing the family welfare and promising full support. Criticising the Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal for accusing the Congress of politicizing the issue, the Congress Legislative Party leader Sunil Jakhar asked him, what did he expect Congress to do when the government had forgotten the governance. He maintained that had it not been the pressure built up by the Congress the government would not have moved into action and the abducted girl would still have been in the captivity of her tormentors.
