District Development Commissioner Ramban, Modammad Aijaz convened a meeting of officers to review the performances under Saakshar Bharat Mission (SBM), a centrally sponsored scheme started by Government of India for educating illiterate adults in the age group 15-35 years.The DDC was apprised about the achievements registered by the department in implementation of the scheme. It was informed that 171 Preraks are working in 114 functional adult centres in the entire district with the enrolled strength of 7455 adults.Speaking on the occasion the DDC said that literacy under this mission means not only learning how to read, write and count but also helping people understand why they are deprived and helping them move towards change.
He stressed on mass level awareness camps, community mobilisation programmes, public interaction meets and campaigns by the school level, Zone level and district level education officer in order to enhance enrolment in this programme . DDC asked the CEO and ZEOs to involve and motivate the volunteer students of secondary and higher secondary classes to educate the illiterates of their locality. He also directed the ZEOs to monitor the working of adult education centres besides conducting regular meetings with Preraks and volunteer teachers.CPO, Parshotam Kumar, CEO, Mohammad Sharif, Principal DIET, Banihal, Sham Lal, ZEOs and other officers attended the meeting.
