The government on Wednesday said all steps were being taken to encourage more representation and participation of women in national science academies.Since the participation of women in higher science academics has improved significantly in recent times, the government has launched a new initiative under a scheme called Knowledge Involvement in Research Advancement through Nurturing (KIRAN), Union Science and Technology Minister Harsh Vardhan told the Lok Sabha. He informed members during Question Hour that according to the University Grants Commission, 51 per cent females and 49 per cent males were pursuing post-graduate studies in universities in the country. The government is also assisting those women science students who have done their basic academic qualifications but were presently confined within four walls of their home. Some women scientists were also given emoluments of about Rs 55,000 per month and capable students were also encouraged for research works. In addition, the government has also introduced a "mobility scheme" under which women science students were provided with assistance when they either have to dislocate themselves owing to family pressure and other works.
