Kashmir Crisis: European Union urges safety and security of Kashmiri people

Europe has broken the silence on current Kashmir unrest while expressing grief and sorrow over the recent killings of civilians disclosed that European Union continues to monitor the situation. The European Union also urged for calm in Kashmir and involvement of Kashmiri representatives in dialogue process. This was stated by the Maja KOCIJANCIC Spokesperson for EU Foreign Affairs and Security Policy in a reply to Kashmir Foundation.The spokesperson paying condolences to the families of the victims said, “We express our condolences to the families of the victims and the many injured during the latest outbreak of violence in Kashmir.”Stressing the safety and security of the Kashmiri people the spokesperson said, “The restoration of calm, and maintaining law and order with the necessary restraint, are vital to guarantee the safety and security of the people of Kashmir.”

About the European Union’s stand on Kashmir the spokesperson urged India, Pakistan to involve the Kashmiri people (representatives) into any dialogue process and said “It is a longstanding position of the EU to support the reconciliation process between India and Pakistan over Kashmir, particularly through dialogue, and to call for the Kashmiri people themselves to be as involved as possible in this process. This position remains unchanged.”The European Union continues to monitor the situation and remains in contact with Indian and Pakistani authorities, the spokesperson said.Kashmir Foundation had earlier contacted EU Foreign Affairs and Security Policy to react on the latest uprising against Indian rule that erupt after the killing of Burhan Wani a local rebel commander of Hizbul Mujahideen.
