Claiming that the arrest of the three senior officials, who were ‘extorting’ money from pesticide dealers in Bathinda was part of the “Pesticide Scam” unearthed few months back, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) today demanded resignation of Agriculture Minister Tota Singh. In a joint statement on Saturday, AAP spokesperson, Sukhpal Singh Khaira, Kanwar Sandhu and Aman Arora accused Punjab government for shielding the real culprits in the case.“This extortion was being done at the behest of Agriculture Minister Tota Singh and Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal and senior agriculture department’s officials were mere his ‘conduit’ for collecting money for their political purpose”, Khaira said.Earlier, white fly hit the Cotton growers of the state badly, followed by the supply of spurious pesticides by the agriculture demand, now this ‘extortion’ was being done for allowing continued supply of such spurious pesticides, Sandhu said.Arora said the state government was deliberately delaying filing a challan against former Agriculture Director Mangal Singh Sandhu in the Rs 33-crore pesticide scam.

It is pertinent to mention here that a Joint Director in the state Agriculture Department and two Agriculture Development Officers (ADOs) were arrested Friday on the charge of extorting Rs 4.5 lakh from six Bathinda- based pesticide dealers.Joint Director Sarabjit Kandhari and ADOs Gurdial Singh (cash crop) and Vivek Shankar (plant protection) reached Bathinda on Wednesday on an official trip to inspect pesticides in shops and godowns.A case under Section 384 (extortion) of the Indian Penal Code and Section 13 (2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act has been registered against the accused persons at the Civil Line police station.AAP leaders sought an inquiry by a sitting Judge of High Court to probe the role of top officials and politicians in the scam in the Agriculture Department.
