30 youth sustain serious eye injuries: GMC Principal

Says 84 eye surgeries were conducted in past five days

While the use of pellet guns against protesters triggered wide-spread condemnation from all the corners, the hospital officials on Thursday informed that at least 30 youth have received severe eye injuries during the ongoing cycle on violence in the Valley.Government Medical College (GMC) principal, Dr Kaisar told KNS that, “44 youth having eye injuries are currently admitted in hospital. Earlier, there were 113 youth admitted in the hospital while 69 youth among them were discharged from the hospital after treatment.” He said, “At least 30 youth have received severe eye injuries while it is too early to say whether they can regain their eye sight or not. We have treated them and after four weeks we will come to know about the situation of their eyesight,” he said.He however informed that despite 30 injured youths, there are zero chances for other three youths to regain their eye-sights as their eyes have been damaged.Dr Kaiser said that in past five days, 84 eye surgeries were conducted in the hospital.Meanwhile, GMC principal confirmed that the team sent by the Government of India today visited the hospital from this morning till 01:00 Pm. “The team comprising of three specialized doctors form RP centre of AIIMS visited every ward here and saw the patients. They also checked the equipments and other facilities used for treating the youth who had received pellet injuries in their eyes,” he said.He said that the doctors said that all the injured youth have been treated in a well manner in the state and there is no need to send them outside the state for the treatment.
