Top Hizb militant killed in North Kashmir encounter

Clashes erupt in Sopore, protesters torch police vehicle

A militant was Tuesday killed in an encounter that raged between forces and militants in Gamandar, Nagri area of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district, an official said.

Defence spokesman, colonel N N Joshi KNS that after specific information about the presence of militants that a joint operation was launched by army and Jammu and Kashmir Police, who cordoned off the Nagri village near Drugmulla in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district.“Several warning shots were earlier fired towards the suspected spot but the militants opened fire, triggering off an encounter,” he told KNS, adding that one militant was killed in an encounter while a Chinese Pistol, ammunition and other war like stores were recovered from him.

The slain militant was identified as Sameer Ahmad Wani Alias Jana, son of Samander Ahmad Wani, resident of Sopore, who joined Hizb, a militant outfit in the year 2014 and was Divisional Commander for north Kashmir.Meanwhile, protesters torched a police vehicle at Shiva, Sopore area of north Kashmir's Baramulla district during clashes between youth and forces after the news about the killing of the militant spread.Eye-witnesses told KNS that during the clashes in the area, agitated protesters stopped a police vehicle set it ablaze.Pertinently, locals from Sopore mostly youth took to streets and staged protest while chanting pro-freedom slogans. “Police resorted to tear smoke shells to disperse the youth who were throwing stones on them,” witnesses said.Clashes were ongoing when the report was last filed.
