Minister for PHE, Irrigation and Flood Control, Sham Lal Chaudhary, today, replying to a question of Dharambir Singh Oberoi, informed that under Prime Minister’s Package for the State, Rs. 1458 crore have been earmarked for Jhelum Flood Management works.The Minister informed that the package includes Rs. 280 crore for flood threat to river Jhelum for Phase-I, Rs 399.29 crore for comprehensive plan for flood management works on Jhelum Phase-I and Rs 1178 crore for Phase-II, saying that the Phase-I and Phase-II contain components like land compensation, bridges and civil works and dredging of river Jhelum.Sham Choudhary informed that dredging work of river Jhelum has already been started at two places in Srinagar and Baramulla, adding that 2 departmental dredgers are working in Baramulla, while as 2 dredgers have been outsourced for two sections in Srinagar and Baramulla to M/s Reach Dredging Ltd, Kolkata to dredge out 7 lakh cumes from Srinagar and 9 lakh cumes from Baramulla reach. He said that efforts afoot for timely completion of dredging work so that carrying capacity of the river increases.Ramesh Arora, Ghulam Nabi Monga and Yasir Reshi raised supplementary to the main question.
