Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee President Capt Amarinder Singh today asked the party workers to gear and pull up their socks for the decisive fight ahead in the parliamentary elections. He said, the Akalis were already getting nervous and were now arm-twisting the Congress workers to join the Akali Dal. Addressing a well attended public meeting organised by the local MLA and District Congress Committee president Sunder Shyam Arora here today, Capt Amarinder alleged that the Akalis, particularly the Revenue Minister Bikram Majithia had let lose a reign of terror on the Congress workers and they were still holding the forte. The PCC President said, he had already toured several parts of the state where the Congress workers had been victimised. He said, barring a few, all the Congress workers had shown great courage to confront the vindictive regime. However, he added, this was not going to last long as people will soon call their bluff.Expressing grave concern over the deteriorating law and order situation in the state, he pointed out, a girl had been kidnapped from Faridkote a week ago and the government had not done anything. The people have been forced to protest and go for shut down even then the police have not taken any action since the accused was being shielded by some Akali leaders. Having a dig at the Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and his Deputy Chief Minister son Sukhbir Badal for their pergent views on the Foreign Direct Investment in the retail sector, he said, it was sheer opportunism on their part to survive in the government that has made them to oppose the FDI in retail. Otherwise, he remarked, they know it too well that the retail FDI is in the interest of the farmers and people of Punjab.Capt Amarinder reminded the BJP leaders who are now opposing the FDI in retail that Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s government had in 2002 supported the FDI move and now they were opposing it only as they feared that the Congress will get credit for the same. Prominent among others present on the occasion included PCC vice president Chaudhary Jagjeet, MLAs Sunder Shyam Arora, Sangat Singh Giljian, Love Kumar Goldy, Major Amardeep, Sonu Dhesi, Jagdeep Sidhu and others.
