Army Chinar corps celebrate on its centenary

The Badami Bagh Cantt in Srinagar today epitomised solemnity and gaiety; poise, vigour and nostalgia as the Chinar Corps solemnised its centenary celebrations with many of its members from different eras and regions joining in the festivities.Chinar Corps, over the last 100 years of its glorious history, has undertaken operations and humanitarian activities across the entire region. Spread over the western part of Jammu & Kashmir covering the Pir Panjal & the Shamshabari Ranges, the Corps has stood like a Sentinel of National integrity. Raised during the first World War on 12 Jan 1916 at Port Said in Egypt, the Corps is celebrating 2016 as the centenary year and to commemorate its inseparable bond with the state of J&K and especially the people of Kashmir, has planned various people friendly initiatives panning across the Valley.The events of 25 May commenced with paying rich tributes to the fallen heroes of Chinar Corps who have nurtured the Corps with their supreme sacrifices. 

The ceremony was attended by illustrious predecessors who have been part of the Corps and have made significant contribution in its growth. Amongst those present were a number of former Chinar Corps Commanders including Lt Gen Nirbhay Sharma, the Hon’ble Governor of Mizoram. Some of the other distinguished guests who graced the occasion were three highest Gallantry award, PVC winners Sub Maj (Hony Capt) Bana Singh, Sub Yogender Yadav and Nb Sub Sanjay Kumar and many other gallantry awardees and their relatives.A traditional Barakhana followed the wreath laying ceremony where all the guest veterans and their families as also other guests from Civ administration, media fraternity and school children got an opportunity to interact with one another. The highlight of this function were the impressive air show by Army Aviation, Combat Free fall by the Para troopers, Para motor display and display of Army’s special Dog Unit. In addition, Hot Air Ballooning and martial display of Khukhri and Gatka dance forms and Bhangra were also the star attractions.

During the event, two Army expeditions of Cycling along the Leh, Nagrota and Uri routes and mountaineering to Harmukh which were undertaken to spread the message of peace, love and harmony were also flagged in to a rapturous applause. Chinar Corps Commander Lt Gen Satish Dua, during the occasion said that this year is being celebrated as the Centenary year rededicating the Chinar Corps to the State and people of Kashmir. He stated that the Corps’ journey has been integral to the trials and tribulations of the state of J&K and its people. He reiterated that the soldiers of Chinar Corps have stood by the people of Kashmir just as the people have stood by the Army in safe guarding the country’s interests and that the Army shall continue to work towards development and progress of Kashmir and its Awaam.
