Senior PDP leader and MP Muzaffar Hussain Baig has demanded inquiry into the Handwara killings by a sitting High Court judge.“The government should order high-level inquiry by a sitting High Court judge. Though a magisterial inquiry has been ordered by the government, but usually high-level security force officials don’t cooperate in the inquiry,” Baig told KNS.

“The high-level inquiry is needed to restore the trust of the people in the police force which otherwise has good reputation among people,” he said.Baig said that the people have blamed the state police of using “disproportionate” force during the protests and they have not followed Standard Operating Procedure “If SOP exists in the state, then police must implement it. If it does not exist, then the state must implement it as per the Supreme Court direction issued in the Nagaland Human Rights Forum case,” Baig, who is a senior Supreme Court lawyer, said. The PDP leader said that the situation in north Kashmir was peaceful till last week but has become grave in the last few days.“It is essential to restore the confidence of the people in the state law and order force so that there is no repetition of Pulwama phenomenon in north Kashmir,” he said.
