The Information and Public Relations Minister Mr. Bikram Singh Majithia today gave assurance in the Punjab Assembly that Punjab Government was committed to the welfare of Journalists and has taken a historic decision to launch a cashless insurance scheme for the media fraternity besides making various important provisions for the media in the Budget 2016-17.The Minister also said that the Punjab government has already announced accidental insurance up to Rs. 5 lakh for the accredited and recognized journalists. 

The SAD-BJP Government has become the first government in the state to have formulated an insurance scheme up to Rs. 3 lakhs of medical facilities for the family members of the accredited and recognized journalists on the same pattern that of the families of the government employees/pensioners.Giving further details of the facilities extended by the Punjab government to the journalists, Mr. Majithia said that in the Budget 2016-17, the cashless insurance facility to the journalists would be given as it has given to the government employees of the state. Besides this the family members of the journalists would also be covered under the cashless insurance scheme.
