Illegal sand extraction:Boats seized, case registered against duo

Two persons operating Motor Launch Boats to extract sand illegally from the River Jehlum near Naninara area of Sumbal division were caught red handed by a team led by Sub-Divisional Magistrate Sumbal on Monday. Eyewitnesses told CNS that in a bid to check illegal sand extraction from river bodies, an official team led by SDM Sumbal Ghulam Muhammad Bhat along with a police team inspected several spots in the Division. At Naninara the team seized two Motor Launching Boats and a police case against the owners of these boats was lodged in police station.Confirming the incident, SDM Sumbal told CNS that stern action will be taken against the offenders. “The inspection was done after receiving multiple complaints that some vested interests are indulging in illegal practice of sand extraction. We seized two boats and police was asked to lodge formal cases against the culprits,” he said and added that not a single person irrespective of their post and position will be spared if their nexus with sand mafia is proven.
