Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Dr Asgar Hassan Samoon today reviewed the arrangements being made by various departments for the plantation drive in the coming season.The Divisional Commissioner while chairing a meeting of concerned officers said that the need for plantation has increased over the last few years due to climate change. He said that planting more trees will have a positive impact on the environment.The meeting was informed that the forest department has 61 lakh conifer saplings ready in its nurseries.The officials of Social Forestry division informed the meeting that the department has 7 lakh saplings including 3 lakh Male Poplars. Dr Samoon stressed on the need to remove all female poplars, which are becoming a nuisance for health and environment. He stressed on planting variety of plants to maintain biodiversity in the valley. He said that planting Chinar trees should be made a priority during the forthcoming drive. The meeting unanimously decided that the plantation drive will commence from this March.Officials of forest, wildlife and other departments also participated in the meeting.
