Aryans Institute of Nursing today organized a seminar on various causes, effects and awareness of infertility at its Campus. Renowned gynecologist Dr. Shikha Gupta was the key note speaker on the occasion. Dr. Parveen Kataria, Director General, Aryans Group presided over the seminar.Dr. Shikha shared her insights on the future of IVF; lifestyle factors and fertility; fibroids and endometriosis and infertility; role of stem cells in infertility treatment; and other technological innovations in the area of infertility. The focus of the seminar was to provide education on the causes of infertility, to discuss treatments options, and raise awareness that fertility issues can affect both men and women. She further said that a study from Third National Family Health Survey shows high prevalence of infertility in the southern region besides variations across states such as Goa showing the highest infertility and Andhra Pradesh the lowest. It also sheds light on the fact that infertility is increasingly being affected by changes in lifestyle, socio-economic factors etc, thereby necessitating the government to consider infertility as an important public health issue."It is believed that 10% of the general population suffers from some form of infertility. Given that India has a population of over 1.2 billion, the number of Indians suffering from infertility is huge," said Dr Shikha.

Many factors including changes in lifestyle, stress and the recent trend of late marriages contribute to this occurrence. While poor sperm count (41 percent) played a major role in male infertility, female infertility was caused mainly by polycystic ovarian disorder or PCOD (40 percent). She blamed contaminated food for increasing the estrogen levels, leading to poor sperm count in males. While interacting with the students she further said that there have been a lot of advances in Assisted Reproductive Therapy (ART) over the last decade. These have made infertility treatment much more successful and safer for infertile couples. There has been a lot of focus on evidence-based medicine and generation of Indian data to help infertile couples in India.”Prof. A.P Jain, Director; Prof. B.S Sidhu, Registrar; Dr. Manjula Kataria, Principal; Dr. Aarti Sharma; Ms. Sweety Ghai, HOD, Nursing; Ms Nimarjeet Kaur, Ms Prabhjeet Kaur, Ms Kusum  Thakur etc were also present.
