Srinagar , 05 Oct 2015

A woman was allegedly set ablaze by her husband in Shopian district of south Kashmir.Official sources told GNS that the woman, identified as Asiya, daughter of Muhammad Yusuf of Nowgam village, was burnt to death by her husband Rayees Ahmad at their house few days ago. They said that the soon after the incident, the other family members later immediately shifted the woman to a nearby hospital where she succumbed today.A police official while confirming the incident told Kashmir Glory that a case has been registered and further investigations have been taken up.A similar incident in Khanyar area of downtown Srinagar had sparked massive outrage around two weeks ago.The steep rise in domestic violence is tormenting women; they develop psychological apprehensions, which lead to suicides in many cases.

According to various reports more than 4,000 cases of domestic violence were recorded in the state out of which some 2,010 cases have been recorded in the last five years. Among the 2,010 cases registered, Jammu district tops the list with about 1,250 cases and some 600 cases occurred in the Valley of Kashmir. Leh and Kargil have seen 1 and 3 cases of domestic violence so far respectively. This rise depicts a skewed social order in the state.Domestic violence creates an imbalance in the families giving rise to psychological problems. It seriously damages the mental and physical health of the victim, which in turn has serious effect on the next generation. Exposure to parental domestic violence affects growing children. It impairs the moral and psychological behaviour of the kids. Although government of India and the state government has put in place several acts to stop domestic violence but this evil continues.
